Planning to offer food deliveries? Make sure to use the right equipment

Currently, food deliveries are playing an important role in nearly all catering and customer service companies. This includes restaurants, cafés, canteens, bars and other companies that specialise in fresh food production. Adapting to these new conditions is not always easy, because a small investment in the proper food delivery equipment is required. Whether the food will be delivered by car, motorbike or bicycle – the most important factor is keeping it warm/cold and in the proper condition. If you are planning to deliver food to your clients, you will need the following items:

Disposable containers

Standard-sized sealable plastic containers are available for transporting prepared meals. They can be solid or divided by partitions to separate certain parts of the dish (the main course + garnishes). Special dishes are used to carry soups. Pizzas are always transported in special cardboard boxes.

GN (gastronorm) dishes

Gastronorm stainless steel dishes are designed for storing food in heated or refrigerated displays, as well as for producing certain types of specialist dishes.

During deliveries, these dishes are typically used for large catering events when food needs to be delivered to offices, personal parties or from one production site to another.

Insulated pizza delivery bags

Pizza deliveries remain one of the most popular sectors in the delivery market. In the past, pizza delivery services were offered exclusively by pizzerias. However, many different cafés and restaurants now include pizzas on their menus. Insulated pizza delivery bags can be purchased in different widths, while their height is usually adjustable. They are designed to carry 35, 45, 50, 55 or 60 cm cardboard pizza boxes. Some insulated pizza delivery bags also feature a 12V connection that helps maintain the heat during longer delivery times. In such cases, the temperature is only maintained at about 70-80 degrees, so they are not suitable for carrying other hot dishes.

The insulated pizza delivery bags have durable handles that maintain the delivery bag in a stable position while it is being carried. Some bags also have pockets for holding receipts, invoices and other food delivery documents.

Insulated food delivery bags

Insulated food delivery bags feature taller delivery boxes. They are designed for carrying not only pizzas, but also other disposable containers. Usually, these bags can hold two rows of 6 disposable containers stacked on top of one another.

The largest insulated food delivery bag measures 355 x 535 x 430 mm (width–length–height). It can carry a 35 cm pizza box, plus a number of disposable containers. The food delivery bags are made of heat-retaining materials that will maintain the temperature inside the bag for a certain period of time.

The outer surface is made of nylon. A few pockets are included for holding documents.

Thermoboxes

Thermoboxes are designed for transporting not only pizzas and disposable containers, but also GN containers holding hot or cold dishes. They do not have fabric straps. However, some have metal carrying handles. They are designed for companies that frequently need to transport large quantities of prepared food.

Thermoboxes can be made of EPP (polypropylene) or EPS (polystyrene). These materials can retain temperatures of 80-110 degrees, depending on the thickness of the walls.

Thermoboxes are suitable for transporting not only hot but also frozen products. As a result, they are often used not only by gastronomy but also by confectionery companies, which need to keep their products at a cold temperature (ice creams, cakes, etc.).

The dimensions of the thermoboxes vary depending on the GN containers they are designed to carry. Small 10 litre thermoboxes will hold GN ½ dishes. Meanwhile, 100 litre thermoboxes have inner partitions to carry GN 2/1 dishes. Shallow dishes can be stored in special thermoboxes that are loaded from the side, not from the top, that are called “frontloaders”. Frontloaders are designed for transporting containers of various depths. Thermoboxes may also be customisable. This means that a few frames can be placed in layers within the box. One layer will hold one row of containers. These boxes will measure 1200 x 800 x 200 mm to easily fit on a standard Euro pallet. Of course, they are designed for transporting large quantities of food.

The smallest thermoboxes should also be mentioned. These are made for transporting just 1-2 portions. These have a similar design as lunch boxes, where the inside is divided according to the same principle as a disposable container. Generally, there are 3 separate sections for the main dish and the sides. However, in these boxes, the food is not stored in plastic, but on porcelain plates that can easily be removed and placed in a dishwasher.

Usually, a thermobox will be easy to clean and maintain, so they are valuable and useful investments for a food delivery company.
